I gained new perspectives and learnt that it is important to step out of your bubble and face the realities of the world
When one thinks of life at SCMC, the first few things that come to your mind are attendance, assignments and class tests. But when you really start to probe, you realize that there is so much more than just that.
As a student of Symbiosis Centre for Media & Communication, I can say without a doubt that it is the best Mass Communication college in India. Over the last three years, I have seen myself change as a person. This change is in terms of the way I think, the way I conduct myself and the amount of knowledge I now hold.
Firstly, I would like to attribute this change to the people around me. SCMC has students from different parts of the country hailing from different backgrounds. Working, studying and interacting with them has helped me learn so much. I gained new perspectives and learnt that it is important to step out of your bubble and face the realities of the world.
Secondly, I would say that the array of classes that we have here, provide us with so much to learn. We have a wide range of courses with a great faculty to teach. The best part about this college is the emphasis it lays on practical understanding instead of just rote learning. All the assignments and exams test our understanding of the concepts instead of our memory skills. There is never a right or wrong, it’s always how you justify your stance. They also help you unleash your creativity and think outside the box. Subjects like visual aesthetics really add a lot of value to this. Group assignments teach you qualities like team work and cooperation.
Thirdly, and my favorite part would be the internships. We have 5 internships over the span of 3 years, which sounds like a lot when you hear it. But I feel it is extremely crucial for one to experience the work-life. It is here where the real learning happens. You learn to work in a professional setting and put your theoretical knowledge and skills to test. The NGO internships help you develop your core skills and gets you acquainted with grass root level problems. The industry internships provide you with a glimpse of what your future will look like. You get the taste of what the media industry is really like and also get the opportunity to hone your skills and network.
At SCMC, yes it may be taxing and rigorous, but at the end, you will only thank it for the person it has made you – aware, tough skinned and ready to take on the world!
