As the COVID-19 pandemic set in, the fervour and excitement of participating in inter-college fests had all but disappeared due to the sudden switch to online mode. However, this did not prevent SCMC students from letting their creative juices flow, and emerging victorious in three events at Malhar 2021, the inter-collegiate festival of Mumbai’s St. Xavier’s College. Initiated almost 40 years ago, Malhar is considered to be one of Asia’s oldest and largest student festivals; and this year, the SCMC contingent outshined competitors at the Photography, Extempore and Panel Events.
While Ayush Malhotra (Batch 2023) secured first position in the Photography Contest, Ahira Mendiratta (Batch 2023) and R. Shweta (Batch 2022) won the top prize for the Extempore event. Talking about her experience of participating in the grand event, Ahira said, “The event was systematically organized, considering that it was held over a remote platform. The themes and prompts were exciting, and the judges gave really helpful feedback after each of our performances.”
The Panel Event saw incredible winning performances by four students of Batch 2023 – Anish Rajesh, Jashan Sehmi, Rajneesh Shyam, and Uzma Afreen. “It was a great experience. I had a great day participating in the event in-spite of certain time constraints, but I still learnt a lot from this fest, especially the importance of time and how to make the most of what I get,” said Anish.
Although online events somehow subdue the adrenaline of an offline competition, winners never back down, as was proved by the SCMC contingent at Malhar 2021. Over four days of contingents battling head-to-head in a competitive amalgamation of dance, dramatics, singing, literature, and art-based events, students from SCMC added another feather to the college’s cap.
We’re extremely proud of all the participants and winners! Congratulations on your grand performances – onwards and upwards!
