India’s 76th Independence Day: Young Minds, Write Wise

8

The Symbiosis International University (SIU) marked India’s 76th Independence Day by organising several programmes under the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative. At the Symbiosis Centre for Media and Communication (SCMC), an essay writing competition was held on August 10th, 2022, with the theme being ‘The importance of national symbols and the flag in cultivating national unity’. The hour-long competition saw both second and third year students articulating their opinions through words.

The initiative taken up was indeed a good and timely one. Though we all celebrate Independence Day by waving flags and singing the national anthem, not many of us know what the colour or the spokes of the Ashoka Chakra stand for. Understanding the history of our country will go a long way in defining its future, and we must also ensure the future generations remain aware of our country’s rich heritage and diversity.

The theme for the competition was given a couple of days ago, which gave the students ample time to research and contemplate what they would want to write about. Enthusiastic students, by voicing their opinions, fulfilled their duty as citizens of the nation, and understood the meaning and value of not just our national symbols, but of the nation itself.

“A thoughtful mind, when it sees a nation’s flag, sees not the flag but the nation itself” – this line aptly represents the idea behind the competition. In today’s fast-paced world, the younger generation has little time to appreciate our country’s vibrant history. Such competitions help us pause and reflect on our past as well as present, and our thoughts flow onto paper.
